In commemoration with the murder of the son of Ben Achikam named Gedaliah, a Jewish fast was instituted after his name. This is one of the minor fasts in the Jewish calendar year observed a day after the Rosh Hashanah.

When is the Fast of Gedaliah 2014

The Fast of Gedaliah 2014 is observed on the 28th of September which falls on a Sunday.

The Fast of Gedaliah begins on the Sunrise of Sunday, 28th of September until the nightfall of Sunday, 28th of September.

The Fast of Gedaliah usually falls on the months of September and October in the Gregorian calendar.

Jewish Fast of Gedaliah Date 2014

In the Jewish calendar year 5775, Fast of Gedaliah is observed on the dawn of Saturday, 3rd of Tishrei until the evening of Sunday, 4th of Tishrei.

Since the 3rd of Tishrei falls on a Sabbath, it is therefore moved to the 4th of Tishrei.

Fast of Gedaliah Background and Origin

The Fast of Gedaliah which is also known as “Tzom Gedaliah” is observed for the lamentation and remembrance of the assassination of the son of Ben Achikam who was  appointed by the King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar to administer the remaining population of the Jews after the destruction of the Temple in 586 B.C.E.

The entire story was described in the last chapter of the second Book of Kings in the Bible. Gedaliah was characterized as a very gentle, wise and meek person. Under his governance, the community of Israel began to prosper which became envious for other Jews. A man named Yshmael Ben Netaniah invoke with jealousy and influence from King of Ammon, plotted to assassinate Gedaliah. On the third day of Tishrei was treacherously murdered together with many other Jews.

The day of his assassination marks the day of the Fast of Gedaliah.

The Fast of Gedaliah Observance

During the fast, drinking and eating is prohibited while bathing, marital realtions, anointing and wearing of leather are allowed. Also pregnant and nursing mothers may be exempted from fasting.

Special prayers such as Penitential prayers ( Selichot) and Anenu prayer asking for special forgiveness are recited.

The Fast of Gedaliah 2015 will be observed on the sunrise of September 16 which is a Wednesday until the evening of Wednesday, September 16 in the Gregorian calendar.
